Chicago's weekend options are organised around Lake Michigan, and the shore you choose determines the trip entirely.
The Michigan shore
The closest genuinely different landscape, at around two hours.
Saugatuck and Douglas — harbour towns with galleries, a chain ferry across the river, and Oval Beach beyond the dunes.
South Haven and Grand Haven, with lighthouses and long beaches.
The dunes — Saugatuck Dunes and Warren Dunes state parks, where sand hills rise directly from the water.
Southwest Michigan also has a wine region around the Lake Michigan Shore appellation, which is not what people expect from the Midwest.
Sleeping Bear Dunes, further north at five hours, is the spectacular version and needs a long weekend.
The Wisconsin shore
Milwaukee, 90 minutes — the Calatrava-designed art museum with wings that open and close over the lake, breweries, and a Third Ward of converted warehouses. Cheaper than Chicago and genuinely worth two nights.
Lake Geneva, 90 minutes — a resort lake with a shore path that circles the entire water, legally accessible past the estates.
Door County, four to five hours — a peninsula of harbour villages, orchards, lighthouses and five state parks. It needs a Friday evening departure or a long weekend, and it is at its best in autumn.
Inland
Starved Rock State Park, 90 minutes — sandstone canyons and seasonal waterfalls along the Illinois River. Busiest in autumn; the frozen waterfalls in January are the quieter version.
Indiana Dunes National Park, an hour — dunes and beaches on the lake's southern shore, reachable by the South Shore Line train.
Galena, three hours — a nineteenth-century lead-mining town in northwest Illinois with an intact brick main street. The surrounding Driftless Area is hilly and green, which surprises people expecting prairie.
Madison, two and a half hours — a state capital between two lakes, with a farmers' market that circles the capitol square on Saturdays.
By train
Unusually for the Midwest, several options work without a car.
Amtrak to Milwaukee, 90 minutes, frequent.
The South Shore Line to Indiana Dunes.
Amtrak to Michigan City, New Buffalo and St Joseph on the Michigan shore.

Practical
Lake Michigan is cold well into summer, particularly on the Wisconsin side. The Michigan shore warms earlier.
Book summer weekends ahead on the Michigan shore — Saugatuck and South Haven fill from June.
Friday outbound traffic on the Skyway and I-94 is severe from mid-afternoon. Leave before 2pm or after 7pm.
