Houston's weekend range is wider than the flat landscape suggests: the Gulf is under an hour away and Louisiana is a different country culturally, five hours east.
The coast
Galveston, under an hour — an island city with a historic Strand district of Victorian commercial buildings that survived the 1900 hurricane, the Bishop's Palace, and beaches.
Close enough to be an overnight rather than a full weekend.
Bolivar Peninsula, by free ferry from Galveston, for quieter beaches.
Port Aransas and Mustang Island, four hours south — better beaches and better fishing.
South Padre, six hours, which is a long weekend.
West: Austin and the Hill Country
Austin, three hours — music, food, Barton Springs' spring-fed pool at a constant temperature year round, and the bats emerging from under the Congress Avenue Bridge on summer evenings.
The Hill Country beyond it — Fredericksburg's German main street and wine trail, Enchanted Rock's granite dome, and swimming holes at Hamilton Pool and the Blue Hole.
Spring wildflowers, roughly late March into April, are the best and busiest time.
San Antonio, three hours — the River Walk, the Alamo, and the four Spanish colonial missions south of the city, a UNESCO site and far quieter than the Alamo.
East: Louisiana
New Orleans, five to six hours — the most genuinely different destination within driving range. Its own food, music, architecture and rhythm.
A Friday evening departure or a long weekend, and flying is worth pricing against the drive.
Lafayette and Cajun country, four hours — dance halls, boudin, and swamp tours that are considerably better than the ones nearer New Orleans.
Natchez, Mississippi, and the start of the Natchez Trace, if the weekend extends.
North and inland

Big Bend is a serious commitment from Houston and is one of the least-visited and best national parks in the country — desert, the Chisos mountains, and the Rio Grande canyons.
Seasons
Spring and autumn — March to May and October to November.
July and August make daytime outdoor activity genuinely difficult across the region.
Hurricane season peaks August through October on the coast; check forecasts before a Galveston or coastal booking in that window.
Practical
Houston traffic outbound on I-10, I-45 and US-290 is heavy from mid-afternoon Friday. Leave before 2pm or after 7pm.
Book Hill Country accommodation ahead for wildflower season.
Flying to New Orleans or Austin can beat the drive once traffic is counted — price both.
