Los Angeles has an unusual geography for a weekend: desert, alpine forest, wine country and open Pacific coast are all within about three hours, in different directions.
Desert
Joshua Tree, two and a half hours. Two desert ecosystems meeting, granite boulder piles, and the trees themselves. World-class rock climbing and bouldering, and dark skies.
Spring and autumn. Summer daytime regularly exceeds 40°C and winter nights drop below freezing at elevation.
Palm Springs, on the way — mid-century modern architecture, the aerial tramway up to alpine forest at 2,600 metres, and hot springs.
Death Valley, four hours, and a genuinely different proposition — the lowest point in North America, and viable only October to April.
Mountains
The elevation change from sea level to over 2,000 metres takes about 90 minutes.
Big Bear Lake — skiing in winter, hiking and the lake in summer, at 2,000 metres in the San Bernardinos.
Wrightwood and Mount Baldy, closer, in the San Gabriels.
Idyllwild, a small mountain town below San Jacinto, with hiking and no ski crowds.
Coast, north
Santa Barbara, 90 minutes — Spanish colonial architecture, a walkable centre, the funk zone's tasting rooms, and beaches. The easiest good weekend from LA.
Ojai, 90 minutes inland — a small valley town with citrus groves, hot springs nearby, and the pink light on the mountains at sunset that locals call the pink moment.
The Central Coast, three to five hours — Cambria, Hearst Castle, elephant seals at Piedras Blancas, and Big Sur's cliff road, subject to periodic closures from landslides. Check Highway 1 status before committing.
Wine
Santa Ynez Valley, beyond Santa Barbara — Los Olivos, Solvang's Danish theming, and the Pinot country.
Paso Robles, three and a half hours — bigger reds, lower prices, and far fewer visitors than Napa.
Further, if you leave Friday night
| Destination | Drive |
|---|---|
| San Diego | 2h |
| Las Vegas | 4h |
| Sequoia / Kings Canyon | 4h |
| Mammoth Lakes | 5h |
| Yosemite | 6h |
The traffic rule
This determines whether the weekend works.
Avoid leaving Friday from about 2pm. Outbound traffic on the 10, 15 and 101 can double journey times.
Leave early Saturday or late Friday evening. A two-hour drive is then genuinely two hours.
Return Sunday morning rather than afternoon, or late Sunday night.
The 15 to Las Vegas on a Sunday afternoon is a well-known trap.
Practical
Park entry fees apply at Joshua Tree, Death Valley and the national parks; an annual pass pays for itself in three visits.
Book desert and mountain accommodation ahead for spring wildflower season and ski weekends.
Fire season, roughly late summer into autumn, can close roads and parks at short notice. Check before driving.
